Story
A rocky shoreline stretches out as the tide pulls back, leaving pools and stones exposed beneath a sky heavy with clouds. Sailing boats rest on waters that stay calm and nearly flat, giving the whole scene a quiet, settled mood. This piece was painted in 1881 using oil, and it now belongs to the San Antonio Museum of Art. Alfred Thompson Bricher (1837–1908) worked within the Hudson River school and also painted Grand Manan, a notable work of his. Looking closely, the arrangement of rock formations in the foreground draws the eye toward the distant boats, creating a sense of depth between the solid shore and the open water beyond.
Where it works
A cool-toned landscape suited to living rooms and bedrooms, and to hotel lobbies, in a horizontal format.
