Story

Rising hills frame a quiet coastal view, where sailing ships drift on pale turquoise water near a rocky, sandy shore under a sky full of soft clouds. Alfred Thompson Bricher completed this oil painting in 1898, bringing a Hudson River school sensibility and the glowing light typical of Luminism to the composition. The piece entered the San Antonio Museum of Art as a gift from Henry E. Catto.
