A sidewheel steamboat rests near a riverside town, its hull lit by warm golden tones against a sky thick with dramatic, shifting clouds touched in purple hues. Alfred Thompson Bricher painted this scene in oil on canvas mounted on board in 1872, depicting the City of St. Paul on the Mississippi River near Dubuque, Iowa.
