Story
Waves roll toward a sandy shore beneath a tall rocky bluff, while distant sailing vessels drift along the horizon under a sky thick with clouds. The palette moves through earthy browns, soft greens, and pale whites, giving the scene a quiet, weathered feel. This piece, titled Time and Tide, was painted in 1873 in oil and now belongs to the Dallas Museum of Art. Alfred Thompson Bricher (1837–1908), an American painter associated with the Hudson River school and Luminism, also created the work Grand Manan. One detail worth noticing is how the breaking surf catches light against the darker cliff face, drawing the eye from the churning water up toward the hazy ships waiting offshore.
