Story
Short strokes of yellow gather across a field of deep blue, filling the surface with a rhythmic, all-over texture rather than any single scene. The marks are dense and repetitive, scattered close together so the blue only shows through in small gaps between them, giving the whole canvas a vibrating, mosaic-like energy. Alma Thomas painted Aquatic Gardens in 1973, and it is held at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Thomas, who lived from 1891 to 1978 and worked in the United States, was associated with Color Field painting and the Washington Color School. Looking closely, the brushstrokes vary slightly in size and angle, so the pattern never feels mechanical, instead suggesting the movement of light or water beneath the surface of the blue ground.
