Story
Small rectangular tiles fill the canvas in a mosaic-like arrangement, their colors moving across shades of white, cream, teal, and dark blue. The pattern seems loose and irregular, yet the tiles stay close in size, giving the whole surface a steady rhythm. Alma Thomas painted this piece, titled Arboretum Presents White Dogwood, in 1972, and it belongs to the collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Thomas, who lived from 1891 to 1978 and worked in the United States, is associated with the Washington Color School and with Color Field painting. Looking closely, the darker blue and teal tiles seem to gather in certain areas, while the lighter cream and white tones spread more openly across the rest of the composition, creating a quiet sense of movement within the grid.
