Story
Vertical bands of small colored rectangles move down the surface, repeating in red, blue, yellow, brown, green, pink, and white. The arrangement creates a rhythm that suggests movement across the canvas, as if the colors shift and sway in sequence. This acrylic work was made in 1968 and is held at The Phillips Collection, which received it as a gift from Franz Bader. Alma Thomas (1891–1978) was an American artist associated with the Washington Color School. Looking closely, the small rectangles never quite align in perfect rows, giving the pattern a loose, hand-touched quality that keeps the vertical stripes from feeling mechanical or rigid.
Where it works
