Story
Loose dabs of blue and pink line up in vertical bands across a pale cream ground, forming a rhythmic abstract field rather than any recognizable scene. Alma Thomas made this acrylic painting in 1972, working within Color Field and Washington Color School abstraction. An American artist and art educator, Thomas built the surface from repeated small strokes. The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art holds the piece, acquired through an exchange tied to a gift from Peggy Guggenheim.
Where it works
Pastel artwork suited to bedrooms and hallways, and to hotel guest rooms, in a vertical format.
