Gray Night

Story

Short pale strokes stack together in tall vertical bands, their white and faint gray tones set against a deeper gray field that fills the rest of the composition. The marks are small and repeated, giving the surface a steady, patterned rhythm rather than a single bold shape. Alma Thomas made this piece in 1972, and it is held at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Thomas, who lived from 1891 to 1978 and worked in the United States, was associated with the Washington Color School and with abstract expressionism. Looking closely, no two columns align in exactly the same way, so the grid feels handmade rather than mechanical, with slight shifts in spacing that keep the eye moving across the darker ground.
