Story
Patches of blue mark out loose geometric shapes against a cream-colored ground, scattered as if drifting across the paper rather than locked into a grid. The brushstrokes carry an abstract, broken rhythm, built with gouache on wove paper in 1973 by Alma Thomas (1891–1978), an American artist associated with Color Field painting and the Washington Color School. The sheet entered the National Gallery of Art as a gift.
