Story
Loose pools of color drift across the paper, blue and orange meeting green and purple while tan passages fill the gaps and dark marks punctuate the surface. The sheet is built from layered washes rather than defined forms, giving the composition a loose, airy feel. Made in watercolor on wove paper in 1970, the piece belongs to Alma Thomas (1891–1978), an American artist linked to Color Field and the Washington Color School.
Where it works
