Story
Dark vertical shapes in deep green and black rise against a pale cream ground, their edges broken by scattered touches of yellow, white, and teal that seem to flicker across the surface. The composition favors gesture and color over recognizable form, built from loose, layered marks rather than defined lines. Made in 1960 using watercolor with brush and black ink on wove paper, the piece reflects Alma Thomas's connection to Color Field and Washington Color School painting.
Where it works
Cool-toned artwork suited to dens and kitchens, and to hotel guest rooms, in a horizontal format.
