Story

A woman sits for her portrait, her face and neck stretched long and pale, her dark clothing fading into the shadowed background around her. She looks directly outward, meeting the viewer's gaze with a steady, calm expression, rendered in soft earthen colors. The painting, titled Antonia, was made in 1915 by Amedeo Modigliani in oil, and it is held today at the Musée de l'Orangerie. Modigliani, born in 1884 and died in 1920, worked within modern art and also created the notable work Frontal portrait of Jeanne Hébuterne. One detail worth noticing is how the muted earth tones unify the figure with the darkened space behind her, making her elongated features seem to emerge quietly from the surrounding dimness rather than stand apart from it.
