Story
A woman with a long, elongated face looks directly out at the viewer, her features calm and steady against a dark background touched with brown and blue. She wears a plain black garment that gives the composition a somber, quiet weight. The sitter, identified as an art model, is presented as a straightforward portrait, her gaze meeting ours without hesitation. This painting, titled Antonia, was made by Amedeo Modigliani in 1915 using oil, and it is held today at the Musée de l'Orangerie. Modigliani, who lived from 1884 to 1920, worked within modern art and also painted a notable portrait of Chaïm Soutine. One detail worth noticing is how the muted brown and blue tones behind her seem to deepen the stillness of her dark clothing and pale, stretched features.
Where it works
A muted portrait suited to dens and living rooms, and to hotel guest rooms, in a vertical format.
