Story

A woman with a pale face and dark hair gazes out, dressed in a brown jacket against a flat blue background, her name lettered in the upper left corner. The portrait, painted in oil in 1917, carries the simplified, elongated style associated with modern art. Its painter, Amedeo Modigliani (1884–1920), held citizenship in the Kingdom of Italy and worked as a painter, draftsperson, and sculptor. The piece entered the Phillips Collection in 1949.
