Story
A man stands close behind a seated woman, the two figures rendered together in muted earth tones and soft blues. Their poses suggest quiet closeness, with the painter arranging them as a couple sharing the same canvas space. This double portrait shows Jacques Lipchitz alongside his companion, painted in 1916 in oil by Amedeo Modigliani, and the work is held at the Art Institute of Chicago. Modigliani (1884–1920) worked within modern art, and among his notable works is a frontal portrait of Jeanne Hébuterne. One detail worth noticing is how the muted palette unites the pair visually, with the blues and earthy hues binding the standing man and the seated woman into a single composed presence rather than two separate studies placed side by side on the canvas.
