Story
A man appears seated in a dark formal suit with a bow tie, set against a backdrop of muted green, red, and brown tones. The painting was made in 1916 using oil on canvas and is held at the Princeton Art Museum, on long-term loan from the Henry and Rose Pearlman Foundation. It was painted by Amedeo Modigliani (1884–1920), an Italian artist associated with modern art who worked as a painter, sculptor, and draftsperson, and whose notable works include a portrait of Jean Cocteau. The muted color scheme behind the sitter contrasts with the dark suit, drawing attention to the figure's formal presence within the frame.
