Story
A woman sits on a red couch, her posture relaxed yet upright, dressed in a mustard yellow sweater with a burgundy hat perched on her head. The muted gray background gives her figure a quiet, isolated presence, with no distracting detail to compete with her form. This piece, titled Jeanne Hebuterne in a Yellow Jumper, was painted in 1918 by Amedeo Modigliani in oil, and it is held today at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. Modigliani, who lived from 1884 to 1920 and held citizenship in the Kingdom of Italy, worked within modern art and painted a notable frontal portrait of the same sitter, Jeanne Hébuterne. One detail worth noticing is the warm contrast between the yellow sweater and the burgundy hat, both set starkly against the cool, undefined gray space surrounding her.
