Little Servant Girl

Story

A young woman with auburn hair gazes outward, dressed in dark clothing set against soft tones of green and gray. Painted in oil in 1916, the portrait reflects Amedeo Modigliani's place within modern art. The piece entered the Minneapolis Institute of Art as a gift from Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Maslon. Modigliani, who lived from 1884 to 1920, worked as a painter, sculptor, and draftsperson, and this portrait exemplifies his approach to depicting the human figure with quiet intensity.
