Story

A man sits upright in a light green jacket with a dark tie, his face pale against the shadowed room behind him, where a yellow door breaks the darkness to the left. This is the figure of Paul Guillaume, painted in oil in 1915 by Amedeo Modigliani, and the work is held today at the Toledo Museum of Art, having come to the museum as a gift from Mrs. C. Lockhart McKelvy. Modigliani, born in the Kingdom of Italy and associated with modern art, also painted a notable portrait of Chaïm Soutine. The sitter's composed, almost rigid posture against the dim interior draws attention to the stark contrast between his pale face and the surrounding darkness, while the yellow door offers a small, quiet break in the otherwise somber setting of the room.
