Story

A man wearing a hat stands beneath a tall tree near a river, playing bagpipes while small figures and buildings appear across the muted green, brown, and blue landscape. The painting was made in oil around 1910. It reflects André Derain's involvement with Fauvism and cubism, French movements he engaged with during his career. The piece came to its museum through a bequest from Putnam Dana McMillan.
