Plate 29 from Harmonia Macrocosmica

Story

A globe crowded with constellations and zodiac figures fills the composition, rendered in warm ochres and deep, saturated hues. Angels and classical figures surround the sphere, their poses framing the mapped heavens as though presenting them to the viewer. Drawn in ink on parchment, the plate dates to 1660. Andreas Cellarius, born in 1596 and died in 1665, worked as an astronomer, cartographer, and geographer across the Dutch Republic and the Holy Roman Empire, producing this piece as part of his Harmonia Macrocosmica.
