Story

A round diagram fills the page with bands of color tracing circular orbits around a central point, depicting the Copernican arrangement of the heavens. Ornamental borders frame the sphere, with figures in period dress positioned at the corners, adding decorative detail to the astronomical scheme. This is Plate 4 from Harmonia Macrocosmica. Andreas Cellarius (1596–1665), a Dutch-German astronomer and cartographer, created this work within the Dutch Republic and Holy Roman Empire.

Where it works

Warm-toned artwork suited to libraries and living rooms, and to hotel guest rooms, in a horizontal format.
