Story

A crowd of men fills a worn barroom, surrounded by wooden tables and chairs, hanging light fixtures, and framed pictures covering the walls. The dim, busy interior suggests easy conversation among regulars gathered close together. This gelatin silver print photograph was made in 1937 at McSorley's Ale House on East 7th Street in Manhattan. Berenice Abbott (1898–1991), an American photographer, worked within the straight photography movement.
