Story

Rows of ornate iron columns rise beneath an arched steel framework, their symmetry defining the vast interior of Penn Station. The composition balances repeating vertical supports against the sweeping curve of the ceiling, giving the space a sense of order and scale. This is a gelatin silver print made in 1935 by Berenice Abbott (1898–1991), an American photographer associated with straight photography and known for architectural photography.
