Pike and Henry Streets, Manhattan

Story

A narrow Manhattan street unfolds between rows of tenement buildings, with the Manhattan Bridge rising in the distance. The black and white photograph captures the density of the city block, its facades stacked close together under open sky. Berenice Abbott, who lived 1898–1991 and worked as an architectural photographer within the straight photography movement, made this image, now held by the New York Public Library.
