Story

Figures dressed in period clothing cluster along a sandy shore, with sailboats drifting on turquoise water beneath a clouded sky. The scene captures a quiet seaside gathering rendered in loose, airy brushwork typical of its moment. Berthe Morisot painted this oil work in 1873, working within French Impressionism. The piece entered the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts from the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mellon. Morisot, who lived from 1841 to 1895, was also known for The Cradle.
