Peonies

Story

A loose bunch of pink peonies rests in a glass vase atop a wooden table, their green stems visible beneath the surface, all set against a plain beige backdrop. The flowers appear soft and full, painted with quick, visible strokes that give the petals a delicate, almost fluttering quality. This oil painting dates from 1869 and is held at the National Gallery of Art. Berthe Morisot (1841–1895), a French artist associated with Impressionism, also created The Cradle. The simplicity of the composition, just blossoms, glass, and wood, draws attention to the subtle variations in pink and green that fill the canvas.
