Story
A small rowboat glides across open water, carrying two women dressed in summer clothing in tones of blue, grey, and white, their hats shading them from the light. The composition sits close to the surface of the water, letting the pale colors of the clothing stand out against the ripples around the boat. This oil painting, titled Summer's Day, was created in 1879 and is held at the National Gallery, having come to the collection through the Sir Hugh Lane Bequest. Its painter, Berthe Morisot (1841–1895), was part of the Impressionist movement. A detail worth noticing is how the brushwork breaks the water into loose strokes, letting the blues and whites of the women's clothing echo the shifting light on the surface.
