The Basket Chair

Story

A woman dressed in white rests on a balcony, gazing out over a garden filled with blossoming shrubs, while a watering can sits below among the greenery. The palette moves through soft greens, whites, and touches of earthy brown, giving the scene a quiet, open-air feeling. The Basket Chair was painted in 1882 by Berthe Morisot in oil, and the piece belongs to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Morisot, born in 1841 and died in 1895, worked within the Impressionist movement and created The Cradle among her known paintings. One detail worth noticing is how the garden below seems to spill upward toward the balcony, blurring the line between the woman's quiet perch and the lush, sunlit growth surrounding her.
