Story
The canvas presents a loose grid of overlapping rectangular shapes, rendered in cream, white, black, ochre, and muted earth tones spread across the surface. These blocks of color sit close together, some edges crisp and others softened, giving the whole arrangement a quiet, structured rhythm. The piece, titled No. 9, was painted in 1952 in oil and is held at The Phillips Collection. Its creator, Bradley Walker Tomlin (1899–1953), worked within abstract expressionism. One detail worth noticing is how the muted earth tones break up the otherwise cool palette, warming certain sections of the grid while leaving others pale and open, so the eye keeps shifting between dense clusters of shapes and quieter, more spacious passages across the canvas.
