Story

A cluster of industrial forms rises against a pale sky: a tall chimney, cylindrical red tanks for water, and pale containers used for storage, all strung together with electrical lines. The composition has a quiet, almost architectural stillness, with each shape set apart from the others in clean separation. This piece, titled Buildings, was made by Charles Demuth in 1930 using tempera and plumbago on composition board, and it is held at the Dallas Museum of Art. Demuth, an American artist who lived from 1883 to 1935, worked in this precise, structural manner across his career. One detail worth noticing is how the power lines cut thin dark paths across the open background, linking the separate structures into a single, unified arrangement despite their differences in color and shape.
