Story
A bold golden 5 fills the center of the picture, surrounded by angular shapes in red, black, and beige, along with scattered circular forms that give the composition a sense of motion and depth. The piece was created in 1928 by Charles Demuth, rendered in oil, and is held today at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Demuth, an American artist who lived from 1883 to 1935, painted this piece titled I Saw the Figure 5 in Gold. The painting came to the museum through the Alfred Stieglitz Collection. One detail worth lingering on is how the circular forms seem to echo and multiply the large numeral, pulling the eye through layers of overlapping geometry rather than letting it rest on a single focal point, giving the whole arrangement a rhythmic, almost mechanical pulse across the canvas.
