Story

Clusters of purple, white, and red petunias fill a dark, patterned vase, set against a background covered in small dots. The composition is rendered in watercolor and gouache over graphite on wove paper, completed in 1916. Charles Rennie Mackintosh, a British architect and designer associated with the Arts and Crafts movement, created the piece. It entered the Detroit Institute of Arts through a City of Detroit purchase.
