Story
A busy avenue in New York City rises between tall buildings, their facades draped with banners from three allied nations, strands of fabric crossing above the roadway and giving the whole scene a festive, patriotic air. The painting, titled Allies Day, May 1917, was completed in 1917 in oil and is held at the National Gallery of Art, where it came to the museum as a gift given in memory of Glenn Ford McKinney. Its painter, Childe Hassam (1859–1935), an American artist, worked within Impressionism. One detail worth noting is how the colors of the hanging cloth seem to ripple and ribbon through the composition, pulling the eye upward past the stone facades toward the sky, so that the architecture and the fabric together create a sense of motion and celebration along the crowded city street.
