Avenue of the Allies

Story

Tall flags of France and Britain stretch overhead across a narrow city street, with buildings rising on either side and crowds gathered below. Childe Hassam painted this scene in oil in 1917, capturing the busy avenue beneath the banners. Hassam, who lived from 1859 to 1935, worked within Impressionism, and the piece now belongs to the Telfair Museums through the bequest of Elizabeth Millar Bullard.
