Story
A rugged shelf of stone rises in the foreground, its surface broken into layered ridges that catch the light. Beyond this rocky perch, the water stretches out in a calm expanse of blue, with distant islands sitting faintly beneath a hazy sky. The composition balances the solidity of the stone against the softness of the sea and air. This piece, titled Duck Island, was painted by Childe Hassam in 1906 using oil, and it is held at the Dallas Museum of Art. Hassam, born in 1859 and died in 1935, worked within Impressionism and also created Laurel in the Ledges. One detail worth noticing is how the texture of the layered rock contrasts with the smooth, open stretch of water beyond it, drawing the eye from the hard edges of the shoreline toward the soft horizon in the distance.
