Story
A busy street scene unfolds from above, filled with people and lined with buildings hung with French and American flags. The painter rendered the view in soft yellows, blues, and earth tones, giving the crowd and architecture a hazy, light-filled quality. The oil painting was created in 1910 and is held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where it entered the collection through the George A. Hearn Fund. Childe Hassam (1859–1935) was an American painter and printmaker associated with Impressionism, whose work also includes Building the Schooner, Provincetown. One detail worth noticing is the elevated vantage point, which lets the viewer look down over the gathered crowd and catch the layered flags fluttering above the street in a wash of color.
