Story

Jagged white cliffs frame a rocky gorge, with green plants clinging to the stone above a stretch of blue water under a pale sky. The scene is rendered in oil, painted in 1912 by Childe Hassam (1859–1935), an American painter and printmaker associated with Impressionism. The work entered the collection through a museum purchase made possible by a donor exchange of gifts and funds.

Where it works
