Story
Rugged rocks edge the shoreline while a tree in golden foliage leans over the water, and sailboats drift across a blue expanse toward pale green hills beneath a soft sky. This coastal scene, painted in oil in 1909, reflects Childe Hassam's work within American Impressionism. The piece entered the Westmoreland Museum of American Art through the Mary Marchand Woods Memorial Fund, and Hassam, born in 1859 and died in 1935, also created Building the Schooner, Provincetown.
