Story
A rugged coastal gorge opens before the viewer, waves breaking against stone in tones of blue, white, ochre, and brown. The composition captures the rough energy of rock meeting sea, rendered in oil in 1912 by Childe Hassam (1859–1935), an American painter and printmaker associated with Impressionism. The piece entered the Newark Museum through a purchase from the General Fund.
