Story
Blue water stretches toward a distant shoreline, dotted with white sailboats drifting beneath a sky full of clouds. The coastline rests calmly along the horizon, giving the whole scene a quiet, breezy feel. Childe Hassam painted this oil work in 1904, bringing an Impressionist sensibility to the shifting light on the water. The piece came to Yale University Art Gallery through a literary bequest tied to the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library.
