Story

Gnarled, leaning trees frame a quiet shoreline, their twisted shapes opening onto sand, calm water, and small distant figures beneath a soft, pale sky rendered in muted greens and blues. This oil on canvas on paperboard view of Beaumaris foreshore was painted in 1926 by Australian artist Clarice Beckett (1887–1935), whose work belongs to Tonalism. It entered the Art Gallery of New South Wales through a bequest fund honoring a donor's mother.
