Story
Twisted tree limbs curve inward, framing a white rail that looks out across calm blue water toward hills in the distance. The scene is rendered with a hazy, muted softness, blurring edges between branches, sea, and sky. Painted in oil on cardboard in 1931, the work reflects Clarice Beckett's tonalist approach, in which she, an Australian painter (1887–1935), favored gentle light and atmosphere over sharp detail.
Where it works
