Story

A quiet river scene unfolds along a tree-lined path, where a sailboat drifts past and a distant church rises above clustered buildings, their forms mirrored in still water beneath an overcast sky. Painted in oil in 1872, the work reflects Claude Monet's association with Impressionism. Monet, French (1840–1926), also created Haystacks. The piece entered the National Gallery of Art through the Ailsa Mellon Bruce Collection.
