Story
A wide view opens onto a quiet river scene, with clusters of wildflowers scattered across the near ground, calm water stretching through the center, and a row of slender poplars lining the far shore beneath a sky thick with clouds. This oil painting, titled Banks of the Seine, Vétheuil, was created in 1880 and is held today at the National Gallery of Art. The French painter Claude Monet, who lived from 1840 to 1926, worked within the Impressionist movement that reshaped how light and atmosphere could be captured on canvas. Here, the soft gray sky presses low over the trees, giving the whole composition a hushed, overcast mood that draws attention to the subtle shifts of color across the water's surface.
