Story
Three sailing vessels with multiple masts rest close together on quiet harbor water, rendered in subdued grays, blues, and browns. The reflections of the hulls and rigging blend softly into the surrounding tones, giving the scene a hushed, overcast feeling. This oil painting, titled Boats in a Harbour, was created in 1873 and is held by the National Galleries of Scotland. It was made by Claude Monet (1840–1926), a French painter associated with Impressionism, whose notable works include Impression, Sunrise. The muted palette and the way the ships' masts crowd together in the composition reward a closer look, drawing attention to how little separates the vessels from one another in the calm water.
