Story

A snow-covered towpath stretches beside a river, bordered by bare trees and distant buildings, while a few figures walk along the path under a sky rendered in muted blues, whites, and greens. Claude Monet painted this winter scene in oil in 1875. He worked within Impressionism, the French movement that favored direct, atmospheric views of everyday places. The painting entered the museum's collection as a gift.
