Story
A dense bed of garden flowers fills the near ground, its colors packed close together, while behind it a river valley opens out toward distant trees and low hills softened by a hazy sky. This oil painting, titled Flower Beds at Vétheuil, was created in 1881 and is held at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. The artist, Claude Monet (1840–1926), was a French painter associated with Impressionism, a movement also reflected in his work Impression, Sunrise. Worth noticing is how the thick, bright blooms in front contrast with the pale, atmospheric distance, giving the scene a sense of depth that moves from vivid detail up close to a soft blur toward the horizon.
