Story
A clear glass vase holds a loose cluster of pink blossoms with green leaves, their stems bending softly against a muted blue-gray backdrop. The flowers appear slightly drooped, giving the arrangement a quiet, informal character. This oil painting was created in 1888 by Claude Monet and is held today at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, having come to the museum through a bequest. Monet, who lived from 1840 to 1926, worked within the Impressionism movement and is also known for his painting Haystacks. Looking closely, the petals catch soft tones of light against the cooler background, letting the pink blossoms stand out gently amid the surrounding haze of blue-gray color. The overall mood stays subdued, built from a restrained palette and the simple, unforced placement of the blooms within the glass vessel.
